Each program is a set of courses in a deliberate order, enrolled in once. You pay a single price and every course in the program unlocks in your account immediately. Prefer to pick your own? Browse all courses individually.

If a notification has been made about you, contact your dental indemnity insurer first. These programs are education. They support your own reflection and give you a dated record of the learning you completed. • Covers consent as a process, including re-consent when a treatment plan changes during a course of care.
  • Includes open disclosure when an outcome is not what the patient expected.

  • Addresses declarations and commercial interests in laboratories, products and referral arrangements.

Learning outcomes

What you will be able to do in the surgery

Each outcome is assessed either through the scenario questions or through the structured reflection activity.

01Explain the core ethical principles relevant to Australian practice and how they interact when they conflict.
02Apply the professional standards in the Dental Board code of conduct to realistic practice situations.
03Identify professional boundary risks, including in digital and online settings, before they escalate.
04Recognise confidentiality and privacy risks in records, messaging and third-party disclosure.
05Apply informed consent and shared decision-making principles, including where capacity is in question.
06Identify conflicts of interest and probity concerns in billing, referral and commercial relationships.
07Recognise communication and conduct risks that commonly precede a complaint.
08Use structured reflection to identify your own professional development needs.
09Develop practical, specific strategies for improving professional behaviour in your own setting.
10Demonstrate applied understanding through scenario-based assessment rather than recall alone.
Curriculum

Ten modules, worked through dental practice scenarios

The two core courses follow this structure. The topic courses in the catalogue above go deeper on a single module.

01Ethics in Australian Practice
Autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice as working tools rather than abstractions, plus a structured decision method you can apply under time pressure.
  • Where principles conflict, and how to reason transparently
  • The relationship between ethics, law and professional standards
  • Documenting an ethical decision so it can be understood later
02Professionalism in Practice
Professional responsibility beyond the clinical task: accountability, working within competence, reflection, and the public trust registration represents.
  • What the Dental Board code of conduct expects day to day
  • Scope of practice and knowing when to decline or refer
  • Professional behaviour toward colleagues and students
03Professional Boundaries
The professional relationship, boundary crossings versus violations, and the drift pattern that precedes most boundary notifications.
  • Dual relationships in rural and small-community practice
  • Treating or serving family, friends and staff
  • Digital contact, social media and after-hours messaging
04Confidentiality & Privacy
Handling patient and client information under the National Law, privacy legislation and your code, including the practical failure points.
  • Disclosure to family, employers, insurers and police
  • Shared records, secure messaging and handover
  • Corridor conversations, screens and incidental disclosure
05Consent & Shared Decision-Making
Capacity, material risk, communicating options and documenting refusal.
  • Consent as a process rather than a signature
  • Substitute decision-makers and advance care directives
  • Consent in telehealth and time-critical settings
06Communication & Trust
The communication failures that generate complaints, and the techniques that prevent them.
  • Difficult conversations and delivering unwelcome news
  • Responding to a complaint without escalating it
  • Working with interpreters and health literacy limits
07Probity & Integrity
Honesty as a registration issue: billing, gifts, conflicts of interest, declarations and advertising.
  • Financial and commercial conflicts, disclosed and managed
  • Certificates, reports and honest attestation
  • Advertising obligations under the National Law
08Documentation & Accountability
Records that stand up to later scrutiny: contemporaneous, accurate, complete and legible.
  • Recording reasoning, not just findings
  • Amending records correctly and never retrospectively without marking it
  • What a reviewer looks for in a file
09Ethics, Professionalism & CPD
How learning needs, reflection and educational activities connect to your CPD requirement.
  • Turning an incident into an identified learning need
  • Writing a reflection that is credible and specific
  • Evidence retention and audit readiness
10Application, Reflection & Improvement
Australian case studies, the scenario assessment, and a personal action plan you complete and keep.
  • Case-based application of every preceding module
  • Structured reflection template
  • Action plan with review date
Assessment & reflection

How completion is tested and what evidence you receive

Assessment

  • 15 questions per course: knowledge checks plus applied scenario questions.
  • Pass mark 80%. Unlimited attempts, with feedback on incorrect responses.
  • Scenario questions require you to choose and justify a course of action, not to define a term.
  • The assessment outcome is recorded on your certificate.

Reflection activity

  • A structured template: what you learned, why it matters in your practice, what you will change.
  • A personal action plan with specific steps and a nominated review date.
  • Downloadable separately so you can attach it to your CPD record.
  • Written to prompt the specificity a reviewer looks for, rather than generic statements of intent.
Completion evidence

Exactly what you receive when you finish

✓Learner name as entered at enrolment.
✓Course title and course ID / version number.
✓Completion date, issued immediately on passing.
✓Nominal duration, stated as designed learning time.
✓Assessment outcome and pass mark achieved.
✓Provider name and contact details for verification.
✓A downloadable reflection and action plan document.
✓A permanent course record in your account.
The certificate does not state that any regulator has accepted the activity, because no regulator pre-approves activities. Record it against your own requirement and retain it for the period your Board or association specifies.
Audience

Which dental practitioners these courses are written for

All courses are open to any practitioner. The content below describes how each group typically uses them.

Dentists and dental specialists

Practitioners meeting the 60-hour triennium requirement who need non-scientific hours covered properly.

Dental hygienists and therapists

Hygienists, therapists and oral health therapists, to whom the same registration standard applies.

Dental prosthetists

Prosthetists managing consent, records and patient communication in independent practice.

Practice owners

Owners and principals dealing with advertising obligations, billing transparency and team conduct.

CPD explained

60 hours of CPD over each three-year cycle, with a scientific/non-scientific split

Under the Dental Board's CPD registration standard, dental practitioners must complete a minimum of 60 hours of CPD over each three-year cycle. At least 48 of those hours (80%) must be spent on clinically or scientifically based activities, and a maximum of 12 hours (20%) may be spent on non-scientific activities.

01

Plan across the cycle

Each three-year cycle runs from 1 December to 30 November. The Board expects you to accumulate hours gradually rather than in a rush.

You plan it
02

48 hours clinical or scientific

At least 80% of your 60 hours must be clinically or scientifically based activities.

Not where these courses sit
03

Up to 12 hours non-scientific

A maximum of 20% may be non-scientific. Ethics, professionalism, communication and practice conduct generally fall here.

04

Record and retain

Keep your own record of activities and evidence, available if the Board audits you.

You retain the certificate
This split is the single most important thing for dental practitioners to understand before buying ethics CPD. Because non-scientific activities are capped at 12 hours per three-year cycle, buying twenty hours of ethics education will not all be claimable within that cap.

Can this count toward my CPD?

Usually, yes, as an educational activity. But the decision is not ours to make, and no National Board pre-approves individual courses.

Before you rely on any hours from this or any provider

  • Ethics and professionalism education generally falls within the non-scientific 20% cap, a maximum of 12 hours per three-year cycle.
  • Check the current standard and the Board's guidance on activity categories before assuming how an activity is classified.
  • Record the hours you actually spent, not a number printed on a certificate.
  • Keep your own CPD record and evidence in case the Board audits you.
  • The current cycle dates are published by the Board. Confirm where you are in the cycle before planning purchases.

A note on how this site is named

Our domain refers to the regulatory scheme our content is about. It does not indicate any affiliation with, endorsement by, or accreditation from Ahpra or the National Boards. If any page on this site suggests otherwise, tell us and we will correct it.

The Australian regulatory picture  ·  2024/25
13,327
notifications received by Ahpra about health practitioners nationally, up around 19% on the previous year.
16,209
practitioners nationally had a notification made about them during the year.
Clinical care
was the single most common concern raised, followed by communication.
Conduct
rather than clinical skill alone is what most notifications actually describe.

Dental notifications are distinctive: they frequently begin with a patient dissatisfied about outcome or cost rather than with a clinical incident. Informed financial consent, advertising of cosmetic services, item number accuracy and scope of practice after short courses account for a disproportionate share of Dental Board matters.

Case-based learning

Six dental scenarios worked through in full

Each case follows the same structure: scenario, decision point, the ethical and professional issues, the relevant standard, a better response, and a reflection question. Cases are composites written for teaching and do not describe identifiable people or matters.

Case 01 · Consent

A treatment plan that changed mid-course

A patient consents to a restoration. Mid-procedure the practitioner determines endodontic treatment is required and proceeds, explaining afterwards.

Core issue
Consent is specific to the procedure discussed. A material change requires fresh consent, including its cost.
Better response
Stop, explain the finding, the options, the risks and the revised cost, and obtain and document fresh consent before continuing.
Case 02 · Advertising

Cosmetic claims and before-and-after images

A practice posts before-and-after photographs with a patient testimonial and a claim that treatment is pain-free.

Core issue
Testimonials for regulated health services are restricted, and outcome and pain claims must be capable of substantiation.
Better response
Remove testimonials, remove or substantiate outcome claims, and review images for compliance and consent to use.
Case 03 · Billing

Item numbers that did not match the treatment

A practice consistently claims an item number for a more complex procedure than the one performed. Individually small, the pattern is identified by a health fund.

Core issue
A pattern of coding error is assessed as intent rather than administrative slip.
Better response
Audit claiming against records, self-report the discrepancy, repay, and put a verification step in place.
Case 04 · Records

A radiograph taken without recorded justification

Radiographs are taken at routine recall without documented clinical justification for the interval or the exposure.

Core issue
Radiographic justification is a record-keeping and a radiation safety obligation.
Better response
Record the clinical indication for each exposure and the interval rationale in the notes at the time.
Case 05 · Scope

A procedure attempted after a short course

A general dentist begins offering implant placement after a weekend course, without mentored cases. A complication follows.

Core issue
A certificate of attendance is not evidence of competence, and scope is judged on training plus supervised experience.
Better response
Undertake mentored cases before independent practice, and refer complex cases until competence is established.
Case 06 · Complaints

A dissatisfied patient handled defensively

A patient unhappy with an aesthetic outcome is told the result is within normal limits, and the request for a refund is refused by email without discussion.

Core issue
A defensive first response converts a dissatisfied patient into a notification more reliably than the clinical issue.
Better response
Offer a face-to-face review, explain the outcome and the options, and document the discussion and any offer made.

If you are undertaking education after a notification or complaint

Contact your dental indemnity insurer first

Before you respond to anything, enrol in anything, or write anything down about the matter, get advice. That call comes before this page.

What a course can support

  • Your own structured reflection on what happened and why it mattered.
  • Identifying specific, concrete changes to your practice.
  • Producing a dated record of learning you completed.

What no course can do

  • Satisfy, discharge or resolve a regulatory requirement, condition or undertaking.
  • Guarantee any outcome in a notification, investigation or panel matter.
  • Replace advice from your indemnity insurer, lawyer or employer.
  • Be represented to a Board as remediation that a Board has accepted.
If a Board, tribunal or employer has specified education as part of a condition or undertaking, the required education is defined by that instrument. Have your insurer or lawyer confirm that any course meets it before you enrol.

How we source, review and correct regulatory content

Sourcing

  • Primary source first. Every regulatory statement is checked against the regulator's own published document, not a secondary summary.
  • Secondary sources are used only for context and identified as such.
  • Statistics are attributed to the specific report and reporting period.

Review and correction

  • Every course carries a version number and a last-reviewed date.
  • Regulatory content is reviewed at least annually, and sooner when a Board publishes an amended standard.
  • Substantive corrections are logged in the course update history.
  • To report an error, contact us. We correct confirmed errors promptly.

Claims we do not make

We do not describe any course as Ahpra approved, Ahpra accredited or Board approved, because none of those things exist for individual CPD activities. We do not claim that a course guarantees CPD compliance, protects registration, resolves a notification, or satisfies a remediation requirement.

Answers

Dental Board CPD, the non-scientific cap and course questions

The questions dental practitioners actually ask before enrolling, answered plainly.

Is ethics CPD required for Australian dental practitioners?
No National Board requires a standalone ethics course. What is required is CPD relevant to your context or scope of practice, based on identified learning needs. Ethics and professionalism learning can sit within that, and it addresses the areas that generate the most regulatory concern.
Can an ethics course count toward my CPD?
Generally yes, as an educational activity, provided it is relevant to your scope of practice and you record it correctly. The Dental Board of Australia does not pre-approve activities, so the classification and record are yours to make.
How many CPD hours do dental practitioners need?
A minimum of 60 hours over each three-year cycle, of which at least 48 hours (80%) must be clinically or scientifically based and a maximum of 12 hours (20%) may be non-scientific. The Board encourages you to spread activity across the cycle rather than accumulate it at the end.
Do ethics courses count as scientific or non-scientific?
Ethics, professionalism, communication and practice conduct education generally falls within the non-scientific category, which is capped at 12 hours per three-year cycle. We say this plainly because it affects how much of this education is claimable. Check the Board's current standard and classify your own activities accordingly.
Do dental practitioners need a CPD home?
No. The CPD home requirement applies to medical practitioners under the Medical Board's standard. Dental practitioners record their own CPD against the Dental Board's registration standard.
Is this course Ahpra accredited?
No. Ahpra does not accredit CPD courses, and neither does any National Board accredit individual commercial activities. Treat any provider claiming an Ahpra-accredited or Ahpra-approved course with caution.
Is this course approved by the Dental Board of Australia?
No. The Dental Board of Australia sets registration standards and publishes codes and guidelines. It does not approve or endorse individual commercial courses. Our content is written with reference to its published standards, which is a different thing from approval.
How long does each course take?
Each course is designed as approximately two hours of self-paced learning, including the assessment and reflection activity. Record the time you actually spend, according to your own Board's rules.
Can this course support learning related to a complaint or notification?
It can support your own structured reflection and learning, and the certificate documents what you completed and when. It does not satisfy, discharge or resolve any regulatory requirement, condition or undertaking. If a notification has been made about you, contact your dental indemnity insurer before taking any step, including enrolling in education.
What evidence do I receive after completion?
A dated certificate showing your name, course title, course version, completion date, nominal duration and assessment outcome, plus a permanent course record in your account and a downloadable reflection document.
Who wrote and reviewed the course?
The courses are written and reviewed by Dr Richard, a practising clinician with postgraduate training in healthcare law and ethics. His qualifications, profile and the review date are published on this page.
How often is the course updated?
Every course carries a version number and a last-reviewed date. Regulatory content is reviewed at least annually, and sooner when the Dental Board of Australia publishes a new or amended standard, code or guideline affecting the material.
