The problem

What this program is actually for

A notification letter is deliberately neutral in tone and gives you very little to work with. Most practitioners respond by explaining what happened. A National Board has already read the account of what happened — what it is looking for is whether you understand why it mattered and what you have changed. Those are different things, and the gap between them is where most responses fall down.

What changes by the end: You will be able to distinguish description from reflection, articulate why a concern mattered beyond the immediate consequence, identify specific practice changes rather than intentions, and hold a dated record of the education you completed while the matter was live.

Twelve hours of learning. Most practitioners complete it across one to two weeks alongside work, or in two evenings if a submission deadline is close.

Two things worth knowing before you buy on hours

  • Dental practitioners: ethics and professionalism generally falls in the non-scientific category, capped at 12 hours per three-year cycle.
  • Pharmacists: the Board counts credits, not hours, weighted by activity group and self-assessed by you. Do not read hours as credits.

Answers

Questions about this program

Will completing this program resolve my notification?
No. No course can guarantee or influence a regulatory outcome. This program is education. It supports your own reflection and produces a dated record of what you studied. How that is used in your matter is a question for your indemnity insurer or lawyer.
Should I do this before or after I respond to the Board?
Speak to your indemnity insurer before doing either. Practitioners commonly find the reflection content useful before drafting, because it changes what they think the submission needs to contain.
Is the certificate enough evidence of remediation?
A certificate documents that learning was completed and when. Whether it carries weight in your matter depends on the circumstances, the relevance of the learning, and the quality of your own reflection. Take advice on how to present it.
My matter is with my employer, not the Board. Is this still relevant?
Yes. Employer performance processes assess the same three things: insight, reflection and change. Many Board notifications also begin as employer reports.
Do I have to tell anyone I enrolled?
No. Your enrolment is private. Nothing is reported to any regulator, employer or third party.
