Why this matters  ·  for osteopaths

Osteopathy's regulatory exposure centres on consent, evidence and how treatment is described. Hands-on techniques require region-specific consent and disclosure of risk; techniques such as cranial or visceral osteopathy attract questions about the evidence base and how they are represented to patients; and advertising must not claim more than the evidence supports.

CPD explained

25 hours of CPD each year, relevant to your scope

Under the Osteopathy Board's CPD registration standard, osteopaths must complete 25 hours of CPD each year, which includes four hours of mandatory topics approved by the Board, and must hold a current senior first aid certificate. CPD must be relevant to your scope of practice and recorded in a CPD folder. There is no CPD home requirement: you record your own goals, activities and reflections.

The osteopathy standard has two features worth noting: four hours of Board-approved mandatory topics each year, and a current senior first aid certificate requirement. Ethics and professionalism count toward your general hours; check whether they meet a mandatory topic before relying on that.

Can this count toward my CPD?

Usually, yes, as an educational activity relevant to your scope. But the decision is not ours, and no National Board pre-approves individual courses.

Case 01 · Consent

Treatment of an intimate region without specific consent

An osteopath treats the ribs, pelvis or upper thigh for a presenting complaint without specifically explaining and consenting to the region.

Core issue
Consent is region-specific, especially for areas near intimate regions, and general consent does not cover it.
Better response
Explain the region and clinical necessity, gain and document specific consent, and offer a chaperone.
Case 02 · Evidence

How a technique is described to a patient

A patient is told a cranial or visceral technique treats a specific internal condition, in terms the evidence does not support.

Core issue
How a technique is described must not overstate the evidence, and misleading representation is a conduct matter.
Better response
Describe techniques accurately and within the evidence, and do not claim effects the evidence does not support.
Case 03 · Scope

A presentation that needed medical referral

An osteopath continues treating a presentation that has red-flag features requiring medical referral, rather than referring.

Core issue
Recognising red flags and referring is a core safety duty, and failure to refer is a common concern.
Better response
Screen for red flags, refer promptly where indicated, document the reasoning, and safety-net.
Case 04 · Advertising

An outcome claim on a clinic website

A clinic advertises that treatment resolves a specific condition, based on impressions rather than acceptable evidence.

Core issue
Outcome claims about regulated health services must be substantiated, and testimonials are restricted.
Better response
Remove or substantiate the claim, and review testimonial and third-party review content the clinic controls.
Case 05 · Documentation

Records that did not support the treatment plan

An extended plan of treatment is billed, but the records do not evidence reassessment or measured progress.

Core issue
Records must justify the plan, and an unsupported plan attracts scrutiny on audit.
Better response
Record objective reassessment, the reasoning for continuing, and the measured response at each stage.
Case 06 · Open disclosure

An adverse response after treatment

A patient reports a significant adverse response after treatment. The osteopath is unsure whether to raise it or wait.

Core issue
Delay and silence after an adverse event generate more complaints than the event itself.
Better response
A prompt factual account, an apology for the harm, a revised plan, and a documented follow-up.

OstB CPD, accreditation and course questions

Is ethics CPD required for Australian osteopaths?
No standalone ethics course is required. What is required is CPD relevant to your scope of practice. Ethics and professionalism learning sits within that, and it addresses the areas that generate the most regulatory concern.
Can an ethics course count toward my CPD?
Generally yes, as an educational activity relevant to your scope, provided you record it correctly. The Osteopathy Board of Australia does not pre-approve activities, so the classification and record are yours.
How many CPD hours do osteopaths need?
A minimum of 25 hours per year, supported by a learning plan and portfolio, relevant to your scope of practice, with reflection on how each activity built your competence.
Is the osteopathy standard the same as chiropractic?
No. They are similar in requiring 25 hours and a learning plan, but the detail differs and the chiropractic standard specifies mandatory topics. Check your own Board's current standard.
Do osteopaths need a CPD home?
No. The CPD home requirement applies to medical practitioners. Osteopaths record their own CPD against the Osteopathy Board's standard.
Is this course Ahpra accredited?
No. Ahpra does not accredit CPD courses, and no National Board accredits individual commercial activities. Treat any provider claiming an Ahpra-accredited course with caution.
